Guns stolen...

Left the house just after 1pm yesterday, came home around 5pm.

In that intervening time someone stole several of our guns.

Weird thing is they knew EXACTLY where they were(we have told no-one where they were) and ONLY took the guns, leaving a laptop sitting right next to where the guns were located.

Weirder still they left behind one semi-auto rifle that to be honest was worth more than some of the others....that was in the same location.

The ONLY way I noticed was I was starting to post a reply on here regarding one of the rifles and went to look for it...

We called the cops, came out took a report and dusted for prints on the side door but found nothing. It looks as if someone tried to pry the lock but who knows.

Now in such times you get suspicious but one thing that everyone immediately picked up on was our house had been shown in the last few weeks...we weren't present and neither was our realtor, just the potential buyer and her realtor.

Put in a claim and hopefully will get some money back to replace at least some of them...

Re: Guns stolen...

Wow, that sucks. I'd definitely be hounding the police to investigate the realtor and anyone brought into the house.

I'm curious where the guns were in the context of just how hard it would have been for a prospective home buyer to come across them. I would bet that the prospective buyer was actually a ruse to search houses for valuables, The realtor is likely innocent although futzing the lock would be a great false trail when actual entry was gained with the key in the realtor box.

I ask about the guns' location because any realtor would not be cool with someone digging through stuff but it is quite customary to open closets and attic ladders and such to see how big they are or how they are accessed or to see if doors bump each other, etc.

I am coming to the conclusion that I am destined NOT to own FAL type rifles....I had two stolen this time and one stolen the last....

Last time it was VERY obvious, door kicked in,mattress thrown off the bed, that sort of thing.

This time I was home for about 30 minutes before I went looking for the gun....

The feeling of helplessness is probably the worst part, that and how it makes you feel vulnerable in your own home.

It would have required LOOKING for them...they were not in plain sight or stacked in a closet(well they were before we showed the house...:D).

And no,they were not in a gun safe,we are selling the home and removed the hidden storage area when we renovated the closet...

But while they might have been harder to steal it also means harder to reach in times of need.
We DID get complacent and stop carrying the .357 with us...our fault there.

I was...a little POed.:D

I have tried to become a better person and not get so angry but Lors knows it is difficult.

So....I am thinking we should change course on our firearms....

I am thinking this will be as good a time as any to buy two pistols in the same caliber and same model/make.

I liked the revolver we had, wife liked it too as there was nothign to mess around with-point and shoot.

So I am thinking .357 magnum,7shot Taurus...

This is what was stolen:

http://www.taurususa.com/images/imagesMain/627SS4.jpg

It worked out okay, was too big for concealed carry however...

Re: Guns stolen...

Two FAL's,one 18'' carbine on Imbel receiver(never really shot by me,was still trying to set it up) and one 21'' rifle.

One Remington 870 express magnum with 18'' barrel, nice shotgun.

One Taurus .357 magnum 7 shot revolver in stainless steel.Very nice, ported barrel, liked this one a lot.

A few years back we had stolen a 18'' Imbel FAL carbine, another Taurus .357 snubby, and a .44 magnum revolver.

None recovered although the police do send letters asking if I have any additional information.

We live in a mixed ethnic semi-rural area, property crime has increased in the last few years as we went to a public meeting and everyone is upset about it,black and white.

Of course the usual folks were there, crying that 'taking the law into your own hands' is wrong.:rolleyes_m:

However the loudest applause was for the people who openly stated they would kill anyone breaking into their homes....which is legal in our state.

It's a longshot, but you might try checking the pawn shops in neighboring towns. They'll probably sit on new items for 20-45 days, but you might catch something there.

You can also hit the firearms forums, most of the big ones have a 'stolen weapons' list, and you can list your stuff there. I know it sounds like a needle in a haystack, but several have been found this way. You can also check to make sure YOUR guns don't come up for sale.

Sorry to hear about your situation, I hope if all else fails you'll at least get properly reimbursed from insurance.

Posted it online already, went to our one and only pawn shop and there was nothing.

Our immediate area is....close(as in everyone is related close) and the guns are most likely in someones closet.
Sad thing is the idiots won't know what they have in the two FALs...

When I was growing you had your guns in a nice gun cabinet in the den as part of the decor. Nowadays, if you don't have them in a gun safe hidden from view, you are asking for trouble.

I would start shopping for a gun safe before I would consider replacing the stolen guns.

We have two dogs that had to be removed to show the house, and to be honest after almost a year an donly three showings you get desperate...

Not sure where you live but showing a house without the owners present is pretty common here.

Funny thing is our house is ho-hum,nothing special looking on the outside so it is strange(IF the 'buyer was responsible for the break in) for a criminal to pick our house.

The rifles were not in plain view or even easily seen, they required someone to actually look, that is why we have some doubts...the 'buyer' would have had to have been left alone.

Serial numbers are all recorded and with the police.
Another sad thing is three of the four were private sales....

There WAS no paperwork trail.:banghead:

Remote chance, I know. If someone coming to see the house brought their kids with them, and they happened to wonder off and find the guns. Bad things could happen. Best to lock them up in the trunk of a car if you had to.

If/when we ever move,I have kind of planned a hidden room in the 'barn' we are going to be living in....it will be handy for all sorts of 'stuff':D

My original plan was a 'root cellar' buried UNDER the barn with a trapdoor but reality and $$$ got in the way.

Re: Guns stolen...

Sucks man. Sorry to hear about that.

It amazes me that there are thieves stupid enough to go after guns. The only value in a stolen gun I can see is selling it to a guy who sells them illegally for street price. I guess druggies probably trade them to dealers for drugs?

No matter how you look at it it's shitty risk/return. It's easily identified stolen property that beacons cops every time you use it. :/

On the bright side: of all stolen property it's probably one of the most likely to get back, although no guarantee on what shape it would be in.

Sounds like you did what you could. Above average diligence.(I have an AK in my car trunk as I speak) Shame about your neighborhood going to crap. Find the lowest class potential buyer or real estate agent and that's probably your thief. Maybe talk to a private detective? Finding a stolen gun should be easy for one of them.

Hell: if you're in Oregon I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Even if you're not, you can give me all the personal information you've got on your suspects via PM and I'll see what I can do. IE: Name, address, and phone number +trivia infos like what they do for a living ect.

Very sorry for your loss. In '93 a co-worker had several of his firearms stolen. Fortunately, all but one shotgun was recovered and returned to him by the local police. The shotgun that was not returned was mutilated by the thieves. Good luck in getting them back. BTW, some police departments are not very cooperative or speedy in the return of firearms that are recovered, if you know what I mean. :smokin: Have a plan for such an event.
Take care,

Did you make sure to give the police the serial #'s so they could list th eguns as stolen? At least maybe when someone tries to sell one or gets arrested with one they will get flagged and immediately go to jail.

Might be worth checking the local pawn shops also for firearms. Ask them if they have any pending pawns that will come due.

Talked to the investigator, gave him what we know and he is calling the realtor to find more....

He happened to mention our insurance probably will only pay out a minimum and sure enough the most they will pay is $1000....

So this is turning into simply a wonderful experience...but you live and learn...if/when we buy more of anything,we will have a separate rider.

Of course the insurance co. requires whatever it is to be appraised, which would then mean there is paperwork out there on exactly what you own.

I had my Sig 226 stolen from me two years ago by a "friend" I had let stay with me while she got her life together. She traded it for a bag of heroin in Southeast D.C. A few months later the dealer's house was raided and my gun was recovered. I have it back now, basically good as new.

I keep my gun inventory info in an excel spreadsheet along w/ photos...was a big help that time. I hope you see your guns again soon.

I have an upgraded door, but frankly, once they're in your house, all bets are off. Nowadays you can setup cameras relatively inexpensively, along with motion detectors and lighting systems (and of course an alarm); it can make a difference.
